Quick Take: Logitech MX Master 4 - Evolutionary, Not Revolutionary
Embedded content Short

Five days with the Logitech MX Master 4. Here’s the quick verdict: it’s better, but barely.

What Changed from MX Master 3

Sensor: 8,000 DPI (up from 4,000)
Thumb scroll: Quieter ratchet
USB-C charging: Finally (was MicroUSB)
Software: Logi Options+ only (no Options legacy)

That’s… it. Everything else is identical.

The 5-Day Test

Hours used: 40+
Surfaces tested: Desk mat, wood desk, glass table
Tasks: Coding, design work, general productivity

What I Noticed

The Good

8K DPI sensor: Smoother cursor movement on 4K display. Noticeably better precision in Figma.

Quiet thumb scroll: Way better. Old version clicked loudly, new one is nearly silent.

USB-C: About time. One less cable type to carry.

Battery: Claims 70 days. Currently at 89% after 5 days of 8-hour days. Math checks out.

The Unchanged

Ergonomics: Identical. If you liked MX Master 3, you’ll like this.

Main scroll wheel: Same magnetic ratchet mechanism. Still excellent.

Buttons: Same number, same placement. If you memorized MX3, no relearning needed.

Weight: 141g. Feels identical in hand.

Button Customization Test

Logi Options+ app:

  • Every button programmable
  • App-specific profiles (different buttons in Chrome vs Figma)
  • Gestures with thumb button

My setup:

  • Thumb button: Mission Control (macOS)
  • Forward button: Copy
  • Back button: Paste
  • Thumb scroll: Volume

Customization depth: Excellent. Haven’t found limitation yet.

MX Master 3 vs 4: Should You Upgrade?

If you have MX Master 3: Skip this.

Reasons to upgrade:

  • ✅ You NEED 8K DPI (most don’t)
  • ✅ The loud thumb scroll drives you crazy
  • ✅ You really want USB-C

Reasons to skip:

  • ❌ It’s 95% the same mouse
  • ❌ MX3 still works perfectly
  • ❌ Save $100 for something else

If you have MX Master 2 or earlier: Upgrade is worth it.

Quick Comparisons

vs MX Master 3: Marginal improvements, same price ($99)
vs MX Master 3S: MX4 has better sensor, MX3S has quieter clicks (MX4 retained normal clicks)
vs Apple Magic Mouse: Not even comparable. MX Master destroys it.
vs Generic mouse: You’ll immediately feel the difference.

The 5-Day Verdict

MX Master 4 is the best productivity mouse available—because MX Master 3 was, and this is the same mouse with minor tweaks.

Innovation score: 3/10 (basically a spec bump)
Quality score: 10/10 (it’s excellent, just not new)
Value score: 7/10 (worth it for new buyers, not upgraders)

Buy If:

✅ You don’t own MX Master 3
✅ Your current mouse is <$50
✅ You want best-in-class productivity mouse

Don’t Buy If:

❌ You already have MX Master 3
❌ You’re on tight budget (MX3 on sale is better value)
❌ You prefer trackballs or vertical mice

The Bottom Line

MX Master 4 is a safe, boring upgrade. Logitech didn’t reinvent anything because they didn’t need to. The MX Master formula works.

For MX Master 3 owners: Keep using your mouse. It’s still great.

For everyone else: This is the mouse to buy. Just wait for a sale.

Quick Score: 8/10
